The Adventures of Annalax: Volume I

So my D&D (5e) Drow Rogue just completed his third session of this campaign last night. So far, so good, though he’s discovered that even +7 to DEX saves don’t really help when you roll a natural 1 or 2.

As a background, it’s 5e with strong Homebrew Cosmic Horror elements, so Annalax is extremely fond of falling back on one of his favourite sayings: “As we say in the Underdark, if you can’t kill it, run like a little boy.” He’s also fond of musing to himself how much he could get for selling the party’s Warforged into slavery back home. Why, yes, Annalax is not nice. He is a Drow. Though he’s civil, unfailingly polite to lesser beings (i.e. non-Drow), and not about to do anything Bad for Business.

Thus far we’ve had one major combat encounter… a lunatic fire priest and the eldritch fire vampire he summoned. That was a close-call: Annalax got set on fire after failing a DEX save, and was down to 8 out of 21 HP before he could jump into a barrel of water. Sometimes even distance-combat (he likes his hand-crossbow) doesn’t keep you safe from the wrath of Abominations.

(To add insult to injury, there was little immediate financial reward from saving the hillbilly human village from the creature. He had to make do with fishing 8 copper out of the town well, and nabbing the priest’s golden ring after the fight. More amusingly, however, he did turn this to his advantage – he guilt-tripped the villagers into setting up a temple to Lolth in their tavern cellar. Annalax is strangely devout like that, and if it encourages the Spider Goddess to put the villagers to good use in the Underdark later on, even better).

Healing and cash-flow are currently issues for him: while another party member does have Healing abilities, Annalax’s pride (and quiet contempt for non-Drow) means he does not want to be reliant on such things – he is of the opinion that if you need someone else to save your life, you have screwed up somewhere. The cash-flow situation is simply that the village had very little worth stealing… though now that he’s arrived at a larger town, he’s working on rectifying this. Courtesy of a Minor Illusion (specifically, a Pixie on the Shelf), he’s already nabbed a Greater Healing Potion and a Vial of Poison from an apothecary. He’s also made 10 silver from investing in half a barrel of beer, and one gold piece for removing a “curse” from a tavern door (i.e. refraining from using Mage Hand to open and shut it at weird times). Every little helps…
