Of Earthquakes and Tsunamis
So, yeah, there was a major earthquake last night – a 7.5, centred in North Canterbury, around the Amberley area. It killed two people. 😦
The result was that the entire east coast of New Zealand’s South Island was under tsunami warning last night. Much to my relief, South Dunedin (where I live, some 400km to the south of the epicentre) did not have to evacuate – we’re low-lying, but protected by a massive sand-dune system. The coast from Wellington to Christchurch had it tougher.
Here’s Christchurch’s tsunami sirens in action:
Quite the haunting sound.
